The Three-Season Backyard

Vinyl-liner pool with paver deck and boulder waterfall built by Luck Lagoons

Project Overview

The property is a newer suburban lot with a split-rail fence and open lawn behind it, and the brief was a pool the family could count on for the following summer. That set the schedule, because the work started in October.

Building a pool through a Northwest Ohio autumn means racing the ground. Block courses went in under work lights after dark, and by the middle of November there was a frame of feathered ice across the water.

The scope did not stop at the water. The pool and paver deck went in first, because that was the part with a deadline. The covered kitchen, the bar and the dining area followed over the course of one season, so the property was built out in phases around water that had to be ready before anything else could be.

Our Approach

Luck Lagoons built the project around:

Vinyl-Liner Pool and Paver Deck

A generous rectangle sized for a family and a crowd, set in a full paver surround rather than a poured apron.

Boulder Waterfall

Built at the far end with planting worked into the stone, so the pool has something to look at from the house instead of a blank edge.

River-Cobble Transition Band

A set course of rounded cobble between the coping and the pavers, which keeps the deck from reading as one uninterrupted field and softens the line at the water.

Covered Outdoor Kitchen

A timber-framed structure with stone counters, built-in grills, a sink and stainless storage, positioned so cooking happens at the pool rather than back in the house.

Bar and Dining Area

A stone bar and a large stone-top table under cover, sized for a full table of people and finished with the family's own sign.

Color-Changing Lighting

Run through the pool and into the waterfall during construction, so the property has a second look after dark.

Planting and Screening

Ornamental grasses and purple-leaf shrubs set into the waterfall and along the deck to tie the hardscape into the lawn.

THE RESULTS

The pool was ready for the following summer, which was the whole point of starting in the cold. By August it was full of children, floats and pool noodles, with the grasses filled in behind the waterfall and the deck doing the work it was sized for.

What the later photographs show is a property that kept going. The covered kitchen, the bar and the stone-top table turned a pool into somewhere a family eats and hosts, and by 2022 the bar carried a sign reading Welcome to Roeasis. A homeowner naming their own backyard is the clearest result a project like this can produce.
